When will the translation be done?

February 15th, 2006 by Wendy Pease

I’m frequently asked – when will the translation be done?

A good rule of thumb is that a professional linguist can translate about 1000 words per day. You can do the math as to how many days the translation will take. If you are sending a short document, according to this math, you should have the translation back the same day. Sometimes that happens. But, don’t count on it. Think of the translation process as an assembly line of a variety of products. Your project needs to hop on the conveyor belt and wait its turn. The only way to get consistently same day service for your short projects is to approve the rush fee of getting to the front of the conveyor belt or hire a translator that waits for your short jobs. (if they wait for just your jobs to come in – it means that they aren’t very good or soon enough they’ll be “found” and then won’t be waiting for you). It’s safe to assume that your short jobs will return 2 – 3 days later.

So, when will that language translation be done??!!
