Iraqi Interpreters serving the US

June 6th, 2008 by Wendy Pease

From the current newsletter from the ALC (Association of Language Companies)

Upwardly Global–Help the Iraqis Who Helped Us
Thousands of Iraqi professionals risked their lives working as translators, interpreters, and cultural advisors to serve the US government during the war in Iraq. More than 250 have been killed and others faced death threats. About 500 have fled to the US under a recent government program that grants special visas for these Iraqi allies but does not provide any government services to help them find jobs in the US.

Without support, these Iraqi professionals are unemployed and desperate. In the land of opportunity, the only opportunities they have found are jobs as janitors, cashiers, and dishwashers. Upwardly Global and The List Project, two small, private nonprofit organizations, are committed to helping these professionals rebuild their careers in the US.

These organizations are hosting a career summit in Washington this weekend. The program include job search skills workshops, one-on-one resume development, interview practice, industry roundtables and networking with American professionals. ALC Committee Chair Randy Morgan will represent the ALC on the Translation and Interpretation Plenary Session and Roundtable. Two employees from Schreiber Translations will also attend and volunteer at the summit.

Look for more information on this project next week, including how you can contact these individuals. (see www.alcus.org)
