Does it pay to learn a foreign language?

April 13th, 2010 by Wendy Pease

I recently read an article by Ahmed Khan that discusses the importance of learning a foreign language.  Usually the ability to learn a foreign language depends on one’s level of interest and motivation.  Most Americans think that knowing English is sufficient enough to fulfill their needs.  In our new globalized world, we are learning that not everyone speaks English.   Learning a language used to be considered an intellectual exercise and anyone studying a foreign language was going to be a translator, an interpreter, or a teacher. But Khan explains that there is a growing need for those who possess advanced skills in foreign languages and are trained in various technical areas. Khan states, “this is mainly because of increased activity in international business, the continued flow of huge amounts of foreign capital to the U.S, increased globalization, and this triggered awareness of the need to conduct not only business and educational but also diplomatic relationships in the language of its host country.”
