Language Barrier for DUI -Test Consent

USA Today posted an article by Laura Bruno where she explains, “When German Marquez was charged with driving while impaired, he was read a statement in English warning him of the penalties he faced if he did not submit to a breath test. Marquez, who speaks Spanish but not English, says he did not understand and did not take the test. In addition to a driving-while-impaired charge, he was charged with failure to take a breath test.”

How to Review a Translation

1. Make sure the reviewer is fully bi-lingual.

Use a reviewer who is truly bi-lingual. Taking Spanish in High School does not make a person qualified to review your translation for accuracy.

2. Make sure the reviewer is familiar with your company and industry.

The reviewer needs to be familiar with standard terminology and jargon in order to provide a precise and accurate review.

Incoherent Interpretation for Mexican President Calderon

This week the White House welcomed Mexican President Felipe Calderon. The state visit was a lavish affair that was meant to illustrate the close cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico and allow both presidents to confirm their commitment to addressing immigration reform, drug trafficking and other important issues.

Winter Olympics – Feb 12, 2010

The upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver will be broadcast in 22 languages that include Mandarin, Bangla, Ukrainian, the aboriginal language of Mechif and South Asia’s Gujarati.  This is an exciting effort to represent Canada’s diversity.  Broadcasters speaking 13 languages will cover the opening ceremony when the Games kick off Feb. 12, 2010.

Interpreter Services and Genetic Counselors

I read the best student research paper on the use of interpreters in clinical genetic counseling sessions.  Jason Carmichael from Brandeis University researched the interactions between genetic counselors and interpreters in the clinical setting.  Surprisingly, he found that in 36% of the cases, children under 18 were used as interpreters.  The majority of the participants ranked psychosocial asssessment as one ofthe most difficult genetic counseling components to convey through an interpreter.  Most genetic counselors felt that some specific training on ..read more
